How WebCentral's data centre keeps up with customer growth

Learn from WebCentral’s experience how to manage data centre growth.
From humble beginnings as a hosting company operating out of a garage in 1997, WebCentral has grown to become Australia’s largest web and application hosting company, providing hosting and email services to companies of all sizes across Asia Pacific. It offers feature-rich, affordable online products for small and medium businesses, specialising in web hosting, domain names, premium email, online marketing and e-commerce solutions.
As the needs of WebCentral’s customers evolve, WebCentral needed to ensure it could continue to support customers with increased flexibility and capacity. On a broader scale, it realised market demand for its services was set to surge.
How your servers can keep up with growing customer demand.
Using IBM e-Server System x3850 servers, IBM BladeCenter, IBM System Storage DS product family and Server Virtualisation, WebCentral was able to consolidate approximately 300 servers down to 17. WebCentral almost doubled the number of servers per rack. As a result, it realised valuable space and power savings - enabling the company to increase the density of its existing data centre to keep up with growing customer and market demand.
Server Virtualisation is driving innovation and competitive edge.
WebCentral believes that its server consolidation project has helped position the company at the forefront of webhosting innovation. “Not many hosting companies are involved in virtualisation. In fact, we were the first of the major hosting companies to roll it out for enterprise grade solutions.”
“It was quite a significant move in terms of the new products and enhancements we can now offer customers, such as snapshot and rollback of a customer environment, centralised management and a clearer picture of what the data centre is doing, so that we can manage it more effectively.”
Glenn Gore, Group Manager - Products & Service Innovation for Melbourne IT, WebCentral’s parent company.
